by posted 04/14/2013

Our Little Lax program is designed as a non-competitive introduction to lacrosse for 5-7 year olds (boys and girls). We encourage lots of parental involvement so you can have a fun time learning lacrosse with your future player. The only equipment needed for Little Lax is a stick.

Games at Carl Sandburg MS
by posted 03/22/2013

From Ft. Hunt Youth Lacrosse:

ALL TEAMS VISITING CARL SANDBURG MIDDLE SCHOOL:

Please be aware that the school is undergoing a MAJOR renovation so there are a few things that will require your attention:

The combination of kids and construction is viewed by many as a significant hazard, and our continued use of Sandburg is conditioned upon participants respecting the construction site/area and staying clear of it.

Game day parking:  The rear parking lot will NOT be in use for lacrosse parking, and all cars must remain clear.  Parking will be available in the lot between the school and the tennis courts (to the right as you drive in).  Please do NOT move the traffic cones and drive into the rear parking lot on game days (Saturday and Sunday).

Furthermore, all children who are not playing must have parental supervision and must remain on the bleachers.

Visiting teams may warm-up behind the team benches, outside the stadium fencing, near the closed stands.

It will be a HUGE problem if ANYONE (adults, children) goes into any fenced off construction area or near construction equipment.

Thank you for your help,

FT. HUNT YOUTH LACROSSE

Concussion Awareness & Information
by posted 03/07/2013

Concussion awareness is a growing topic in youth sports. In support of our athletes, VYI Lacrosse is providing an overview of concussions to both raise concussion awareness and also instill knowledge about the symptoms and risks of concussions across our coaching staff and parent community.

Please take a few minutes to review the information, which includes signs and symptoms of concussion and return to play risks and guidelines.

Directions to and Parking at Marshall HS Fields: NEW FOR 2013
by posted 01/23/2013

As you may be aware, Marshall High School (located on Route 7, just off the Beltway, by the Whole Foods and Trader Joe's in Falls Church) is currently undergoing a MAJOR renovation.  Due to the ongoing construction at the school, all community users of Marshall's athletic fields (namely, VYI Lacrosse and VYS) are NO LONGER allowed to access the fields from the school parking lots (as we have in the past).

VYI Lacrosse is VERY dependent on the two artificial turf fields at Marshall HS (the football stadium field and the practice field behind the stadium field), especially for our player assessment sessions (we also use both fields as our home game fields once the NVYLL season starts in late March).  Our continued access to Marshall's athletic fields during construction/renovation was made possible by the generosity of the owner of an adjacent commercial property and negotiations conducted on our behalf by VYI.

However, in order to continue to have access to Marshall's fields, all VYI Lacrosse members (coaches, players, parents, spectators) need to be very courteous guests of the adjacent property owner.

For access to the fields DO NOT GO THROUGH THE MARSHALL HS PARKING LOT!  NEW ACCESS TO THE STADIUM AND PRACTICE FIELDS is as follows:

  • From 495, exit on to Route 7 East (towards Falls Church).
  • Take your first right on Ramada Road.  (There is a United Bank on the corner.)
  • NEW FOR 2013:  Proceed to the Automatic Security Gate, push the button and pull a parking ticket. This lot is now has a small charge for parking more than 30 minutes. As you leave insert your ticket, if you park for less than 30 minutes, then the gate will open and you can exit. After 30 minutes you will need to insert a Visa or Master Card. Go straight as far as you can and then turn right.
  • Follow the far side of the parking lot until it ends (you will be driving parallel to the Beltway).
  • You will see a gate with a large yellow sign which reads “Community User Entrance.”
  • USE THIS GATE ONLY to access the field.
  • Please park as far away from the building and parking structure as possible.

PLEASE BE SURE TO PICK UP ANY TRASH - DO NOT LEAVE ANY TRASH ON THE FIELD NOR IN THE PARKING LOT!

5 Big Things Every Lacrosse Parent Should Know
by posted 12/07/2012

Great article from Lacrosse Magazine on recruiting, scholarships, sport specialization, lacrosse rules, and parent behavior:

http://www.laxmagazine.com/genrel/102512_its_not_about_you_five_big_things_every_lacrosse_parent_should_know

Highly recommended and a quick read.  See sample below regarding scholarships:

These scholarships most often are divided among players. Denver Outlaws coach Jim Stagnitta, the former Rutgers men's coach and current owner of MVP Lax Camps, joked: "I can think of a handful guys who got full rides, and most of them are named Powell."

Said Virginia men's coach Dom Starsia: "If you take our Tewaaraton Award winners — Matt Ward, Chris Rotelli and Steele Stanwick — and added them all together, it might equal a little more than one full scholarship."

Said Georgetown women's coach Ricky Fried: "There's a misconception of the full ride. They're just not out there."

And this regarding sport specialization:

"There is nothing you can be doing in lacrosse on your own in the fall that would be better for you than going to football or soccer practice every day," Starsia said. "You can go bang a ball against a wall all you want, but how do you become a better team player? By playing other team sports."

Becoming coachable, paying attention to detail, understanding the importance of preparation, working toward a goal, understanding your role and evaluating your performance from playing other sports are "such a huge advantage," Danowski said. "Playing club lacrosse once a week, I don't know if that it's the same."
